It's time to future-ready Slocan
Never has it been easier or cheaper to communicate with our citizens - and beyond. It is time for the Village to embrace new communications technology and adopt policies that will allow for better understanding of Village business, including our policies, procedures and current affairs. It is time for staff, council, and the public to have access to digital files. It is time to develop infrastructure so that it is easier to participate in regional initiatives, without leaving Slocan. As leader of the community, I embrace and encourage the idea of sharing information, engaging stakeholders early, facilitating discussion when needed, opening avenues for clear and transparent communications.
It's time to nurture a culture of innovation
Our community is experiencing profound and significant change. As transition to diversified economy - it is critical that we encourage our citizens, volunteer organizations and non-profits to try new things. If there is energy and initiative, we need to facilitate opportunities to implement project ideas and new models of business. We need to encourage calculated risks - if it means our community is empowered to create or try something new...or if it means that we create an opportunity for community engagement. It is critical that our decisions, policies and by-laws support innovation, now more than ever!
It's time to strengthen our regional connections
Armed with childhood memories of Slocan - and new understandings of the political and social dynamics as an adult, I do bring valuable insights into the position. It is tempting for Slocan council to operate as a political island - but strong partnerships with Area H, Silverton and New Denver are critical. Just as Nelson thrives, due to rural residents bringing their talents and dollars into their community, so shall Slocan. Slocan is the centre of the Valley - and we there is opportunity maintain and create services here that benefit the whole valley.
It's time to commit to a strong, healthy future for Slocan
My roots run deep - and new roots have been planted. With my children as my inspiration, I am committed to creating a Slocan that they are proud of - and that they could thrive in, as adults, if they so choose. Slocan is a jewel - boasting world class recreational opportunities. We are located in an abundant valley, and new folks are moving in. Many are committed to growing food and to local food security. We have access to internet, and broadband technology and global markets. We own the old millsite. There is room for creative development and growth - and I am committed to seeking and exploring opportunities to do so.
